Last week we sat down with J.A. Ramirez to talk about his work and experiences. As we met at the door of his house, and he finished up his cigarette, he lead me inside, down… More
Aramis Kelly is definitely a rad dude. If you aren’t watching his videos on Youtube or seeing the world through his eyes on Tumblr, you will be by the end of this interview. His comedy and humor will bring a smile to your face, and his political art will have you moved. I got a chance to sit down with Aramis to talk a little about his work and background.
Tell me a little about yourself:
My name is Aramis. I was born in Merrillville, and then I moved to Gary for like 20 years. Then I moved to Griffith like 3 years ago. I like pizza….cereal….really big into creating things whether it be photography, design, video or food…
You’re into video a lot lately, why don’t you tell me a little about that:
Well I always used to make short little videos with friends and stuff…and I guess that’s always sort of been the passion. I’ve just recently started to do it seriously, which is pretty cool to just make stuff. I work through Vlogs now (video blogs). You’re shooting yourself, so it can be kind of weird at times because people will watch you film. But it’s pretty cool because it forces you to constantly make things and work on getting the right angles or the right shots…I think everyone should try it at least once.
You started off as a designer. Do you still do that a lot?
Yeah, definitely. I’m just bouncing around between things. It’s been a bit since I designed something, though. Recently it’s been a lot of photo and video. But I mean…I still like design.
I don’t really like being labeled like…photographer….or designer…When you do so much stuff, to label yourself as one thing really sells yourself short…I would rather be called creator.
But would you label yourself as a ‘video person’ now, or as a designer?
I don’t really like being labeled like…photographer….or designer…When you do so much stuff…to label yourself as one thing really sells yourself short…I would rather be called creator…right? yeah? That’s the word.
Tell me a little about your start into creative stuff…Did you always want to do art?
YEAH! Honestly, I was an only child and when you don’t have any brothers or sisters you kind of have to imagine and create things. I think that’s kind of where it started. And then like…when I got my first laptop…I got my hands on Photoshop and started putting peoples’ faces on animals and just weird shit. It was something for me to do. I’ve always like…had a thing with cameras..In the 90’s, I would always ask my parents to buy me those disposable Kodak cameras. And I would just empty the whole thing out…shooting everything.
How did you get into your vlogging?
I’ve always been a really big fan of YouTube. I would just spend hours on there watching peoples’ videos. And I knew I had to make a YouTube channel. That was the goal, but I would always put it off…like “I’ll do it tomorrow” and tomorrow turned into the next day. But I saw this one Youtuber, Casey Neistat, and he’s like the coolest dude ever. And basically every vlog he does, he’s like…you have to do stuff…constantly. So one day I just said fuck it and started recording with my phone right then and there. Then I uploaded my first vlog.
What’s the future of your videos?
I’d like to start shooting short films. That’s where I want to go next. Maybe music videos. I used to do music videos…I feel like I have a better grasp on using a camera now, and I can shoot quality videos.
Where can readers see your work?
All of my social media account are ARAMISISRAD. Luckily, I have a name that no one else really has…. So Facebook…YouTube…Instagram…MySpace…Neopets (laughs)….Twitter and Tumblr. I just started a new Tumblr you can follow.
Who and what influences you?
I like to go to the city (Chicago) a lot…I like to wake up early and take the train out there. It gets my juices flowing to create things. Casey Neistat, like I mentioned before, definitely inspires me. Everybody should check him out. Also, putting myself around other creative people. That gets me going.
Cool, Is there anything else you’d like to add for readers?
I think that’s about it about me….Add me on Neopets!
